The Magic of Finishing

The sound made me jump.

It was a gasp.

The sound made me jump. It was a gasp. Not a good gasp. A terrified "Oh My God!" type of gasp. A zombie is ...

Oh No!

Not a good gasp. A terrified Oh No! A zombie is chasing me!” gasp.

When your wife gasps, it’s rarely a good thing. It’s one of those line items that the priest puts in the fine print of the paperwork that you sign after you get married. Seriously, check it out. It’s in paragraph 3 under “Farts, Gasps and Sighs”.

I gripped the steering wheel and regained control of the metal horse.

What the hell baby?

“We have to go back. I left my curling iron on and the house is going to burn down!”

Here’s a tip that you can share with your friends who are married men. Never, ever escalate the drama when you have to go back. Hug her, agree and emit love. Trust me. Even if the stove or iron is off. Praise her for the extra caution. Reassure her that Neil Diamond won’t go on stage until we get there. Do not, and I repeat, do not sigh, roll your eyes or emit a sound that in any way, shape or form could be considered disapproving.

Hugs, not shrugs.

Guys, it only makes sense.  Women are much smarter than us.  Happy wife, happy life.

Ah, isn’t the brain wonderful?

It’s what I call a classic open loop.

What’s an open loop? It’s unfinished business. It doesn’t matter if it’s real or imagined. Unfinished business creates stress in our lives.

Listen, let me share with you an example. In about 2 minutes I am going to give you a gift. I’ll tell you about it shortly. Now please read on.  (see what I did there to you?)

My brain loves to learn by finishing. When I complete the open loops in my life it always ends with a smile, or a high five, or a smug feeling of satisfaction. Every single time I finish, I get stronger.

Building momentum is simple. Momentum is generating the forward progress of each successful step of completion.

Think back to high school gym class. The dreaded cross country run. No matter how much you hated running, something happened the last 75 meters of a race. It didn’t matter if you thought you were exhausted, lungs burning, legs cramping, stitch in your side and 4 steps behind the exchange student from Bulgaria. The last leg of the race something happened inside you. A fire was lit. Breathing became serious and focused. You felt a rush. It was the special burst of energy that real runners called “the kick”. You crossed the finish line and collapsed in a pile of human floopyness.

Remember the feeling when it was over?

My Notes On Finishing

* Make small steps in a project, then cross them off with panache

* Time is an illusion. Life is just the forward progress of tiny steps

* Our perception of life is ___________ but really it’s . . . . . . . . . .

* Plan a meal, buy ingredients, cook, eat, clean up. Get stronger

* Writing = hit publish = getting stronger

* Bloggers – when was your last post?

What was the last thing you finished? Remember to CELEBRATE FINISHING!

What kind of human is valuable right now?

We live in a world with too many ideas and not enough action.

A human who can complete a project on time and on budget is a valuable human in today’s marketplace.

You can get paid to complete a project for a corporation.

You can get paid to complete a project for yourself.

Your magic power grows with each completion in life.

Become a legendary finisher.

Oh, remember earlier I said I’d give you a gift? Let’s complete that open loop in your life. If you put your name and email in the form below, I’ll send you a fun special report via email tomorrow morning called 10 Strategies For Successful Living.  You’re welcome!
