I’m 21 Drive A Corvette & Make $15,000 A Month
The ad in the paper made me so mad I could spit bumble bees.
I was sitting at my desk in my cubicle reading the Toronto Sun in late November 1990.
In the Business Opportunities section it caught my eye. It was obnoxious.
I’m 21, Drive A New Corvette & Make $15,000 A Month
I live in a dream home on a lake, own 3 boats, 4 rental properties and an international business. Will teach 2 serious people my secrets. Please don’t waste my time. Mr. Edwards 1-519-555-1212
At the time I was 22, made $19,500 per year, had no car, and lived with 5 guys from college in a dingy house in a bad part of town. After humming and hawing I finally called the ad. Mr. Edwards secretary took down my information.
Yes, I got a call back. Yes, it was network marketing. Yes, I blew it off for the first few weeks. Yes, he called me back.
He and I ran that ad together in the Toronto Sun nearly every day for 6 months. We would get 10-15 calls every single day. The ad provoked an emotional response in people.
In my 5th month I generated over $29,000 in sales of water filters. Mr Edwards earned $2100 off of my production that month.
Here’s the interesting thing.
It’s 22 years later. The Toronto Sun newspaper is still clinging to existence. The Business Opportunities section of that paper still exists. I looked at it last week for purely educational purposes.
Guess what I saw?
I wish I could tell you I saw Mr. Edwards ad “I’m 43, drive a flying hover car and make $15,000 A week”. But there wasn’t a single business opportunity ad in the section. Not one.
The desire for more still burns in many people. But advertising mediums change.
