Email

Chat

Blogs

I could make an enormous list. For about 75% of my coaching clients one of the first things we work on together is an almost compulsive addiction to web surfing. It’s remarkable the jump in productivity in the first 90 days just by giving up mindless loops around the internet.

Are you addicted? How would you recognize it? What would you do if your best friend had a problem with it?

Could you go a month without the internet?

A friend of mine had an evening ritual. Let’s call him Sharma.

Quit work at 4:15. Beer at 4:30. Watch an hour of BBC world news. Second beer. Watch hour of CBC National news. Sandwich and third beer. Watch hour of Fox News.

5 days a week. For 20 years. Then one day he ascended to another plane of existence because his vibration level was so high and pure.

No wait, sorry. I got my stories confused. The high vibration guy was a yogi buddy named Grunt. He ate vegetables and meditated daily and always had a smile on his face.

Sharma got old fast. I’m not saying Fox News causes pre-mature aging. It might have been the BBC.

Want a better life?

Watch less news. Read less news. Eat more veggies. Drink more water. Smile more. Simple stuff. No course, ebook or subscription required.

Hard to sell simple stuff. People love to buy complicated.

For most of my adult working life a holiday was 1 week long.

Sometimes it was all you could get off from work. Sometimes it was all you could afford.

It’s not long enough. I find it takes me 4 days just to unplug from the work mindset into a relaxing and recharging mindset. Factor in airplane travel and a week just doesn’t cut it.

I went golfing yesterday. Amazing. You have no idea how tough it is to get up and write a blog post for you. The body either wants to work or it wants to relax. Combining roles is a stretch.

I have been getting to do some good thinking in the hot tub and on the fishing dock and at the beach. Thinking is important stuff. Here’s one of the experiments I’m toying with for the year.

What if I designed my workflow into a 6 week sprint? Work flat out hard and intense for 6 weeks, then take 6 days off to just recharge? Tie 3 of these cycles in a row, then take a 3 week break. Then do the 3×6(+6) again followed by another break. That would be roughly a year of 6 intense sprints with 6 short breaks and 2 longer holidays between the big cycles.

The Bulgarians programmed rest breaks into their weightlifting efforts in the famous Bulgarian Burst Training. Short intense bursts followed by planned recovery.

Would my Epic Year Plan work or fizzle? What do you think? I am laying it out for an April start.

There is a cheesy remake movie called Van Helsing with that guy that played Wolverine in Xmen. That movie has cool mad scientist effects.

Picture me in a lab coat, with wild hair and laughing manically.

For the past 100 days I have been running a whole bunch of experiments. For example:

daily blogging

waking up at 5:55 am

work flows

digital diets

avoiding social media

ashtanga yoga

minimalism

meditation

daily journaling

coaching clients via email

location independent businesses

what works now

I have been keeping careful track of a myriad of variables. It hasn’t been easy but it has been illuminating and educational.

Now comes the fun part. I get to study the data and decide what elements to incorporate into my life for further testing long term. For example the yoga has been particularly rewarding on many levels. A month without a cell phone has been interesting, but perhaps less profitable.

When I get back from Florida in March I’ll design some new lifestyle experiments. Do you have any suggestions?

You can predict the future by studying the present.

Presently I’m walking around the mall in Florida. It’s fascinating. The bulk of the people are seniors.

Here’s a good conversation starter for your next Mastermind Meeting.

“What will change in society as a Baby Boomer turns 60 every 10 seconds for the next 20 years?”

Massive change, yes?

Everything will slow down. They drive slower. They walk in the malls slower. They eat earlier. This will impact business models.

How can you serve this market?

Obesity. Television. Newspapers. Radio. What else keeps the Boomers up at night?

The hard candy market. Kleenex and sweaters. Warm climates vs. cold. Snow birds. Politics.

Mark my words. If you aren’t thinking about the growth in the senior’s market, your competition is.

My favorites? Health, diet, sleep, money, travel. All will be impacted by the surge in silver haired people.

The guy on the Youtubes was right. You can catch Mullet Fish using balls of dough. That’s my father-in-law Gus, the winner of the $100 bet for first fish caught. He got that mullet on a ball of Bisquick flavored with Parmesan cheese.

As Commander Peter Quincy Taggart once said, “Never give up, never surrender!”

Day 4 in Florida. Patience is being tested.

I can see the fish jumping right off my dock. I have hit a few of them in the nose with the tip of my fishing rod.

They don’t like shrimp.

They don’t like squid.

They don’t like rubber worms.

They don’t like spinner baits.

They don’t like rubber frogs.

What the what?

Today I was on the big pier fishing for nothing when I started talking to a local. Old guy. So tanned it looked like he was wearing an orange leather shirt. I mentioned that the fish ain’t biting.

”Oh those? Damn hippy fish.”

Huh? That’s right…they’re called Mullet. And they’re vegetarian.

I’ve been on Youtube researching how to catch Mullet. I tried linguini spagetti tied to my hook. No luck on that. Now we are making flavored Bisquick dough balls.

Next is dynamite.

Want more customers? Figure out what they’re hungry for and give it to them covered in sauce. Or use explosives.

If I catch a Hippy Fish I’ll let you know!

I used to read a lot of comics as a kid.

Stan Lee used to start his letter to the reader with “Greetings, true believers!”

I tell you what, I’m starting to buy the hype around this location independent lifestyle. It’s my third day wintering in Florida, and I’m going to the beach today. Sure beats shoveling snow.

It’s taken me a decade of designing my workflow and income streams to facilitate at least month in the sun each winter. It didn’t happen overnight. Practice patience.

It’s funny how normal routines that you take for granted at home become big projects when you’re in a foreign land. Shopping. Do you go to Walmart or Publix? (hint: pick Publix) Bait. Where do you find bait? (hint: at the bar on the beach by the dock)

I took a page of notes in my Evernote on my iPhone at the Walmart yesterday. It’s not hard to make predictions about trends in this area just based by sitting in McDonalds drinking a 30 oz iced coffee, (the medium!) and watching people stroll by. I’ll share some of those insights with you next week.

I have a confession to make. I’ve been guilty of working too hard in the past. A big part of being an entrepreneur is enjoying the freedom that working for oneself brings. When I’m knee-deep in the ocean today I’ll raise my mai-tai and toast all the entrepreneurs who have a dream and are willing to chase it.
